My Practice

My Philosophy

As a therapist in Hyde Park, I  feel fortunate to be able to use my skills to empower people whose stress has overwhelmed their typical ways of dealing with challenges.  Mental health therapy is a safe place where the client and I meet regularly to bear witness to what has already happened, learn new skills to make desired changes, and envision the future to become your best self. My goal is to build up your strengths and skills so that eventually you can stop coming to therapy because you can manage stress better on your own.

My Approach

I use a collaborative, strengths-based approach that enhances skills and supports that you already use to manage stress, mixed with a variety of therapeutic techniques, including CBT, EMDR, DBT, ACT, family systems, and solution-focused therapies. Rather than just one technique, I tailor my sessions to meet the needs of my client.  Since mental and physical health are strongly connected and affect one another, I often utilize body-centered techniques with my clients to alleviate physical symptoms of stress.

Life Transitions

Change is a constant, and it is always difficult, even when it's a positive change. Whatever you're adjusting to, I can support you as you navigate your new world, and I can help you to build up your strength and skills so that eventually you can eventually stop coming to therapy because you can manage the stress on your own.

Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar

Depression and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives. Panic attacks, insomnia, and manic symptoms can throw our life even more out of balance. I can help you recover stability, motivation, perspective, and joy, and strengthen your skills to maintain them.

Relationship and Family Conflicts

Do you keep having the same argument, running into the same problem, or feel stuck after a bad relationship? I can help you gain new perspectives and move forward, and learn new skills to better understand, listen, stay calm in arguments, and communicate what you need so others can hear you better.

Violence, Trauma, and PTSD

Sometimes something upsetting happens that change our whole way of life. Panic, hopelessness, shame, intense emotions, flashbacks, nightmares, and upsetting body reactions are a few things that can linger afterward. I can help you overcome what happened to you and find peace. Check out my page on EMDR to see one of the many trauma-based techniques we might use to support your healing process.

Child Behavior and Parenting

Being a parent is the hardest job in the world. Sometimes we're at our wits end, and that's when it's a good idea to reach out to a professional to explore new ways of interacting with your child. I can teach parents evidence-based parenting strategies they may not be aware of, which can improve their relationship with their children and create the kind of environment that will bring about the changes they want to see in their child.

Grief and Loss

We grieve many losses throughout life, including loss of people from death or separation, loss of materials, loss of health, loss of a dream, loss of status or a part of our identity. Sometimes one loss will bring up grief from previous losses, and makes it harder to manage. I can support you throughout the grieving process as you heal from your loss, and teach you strategies to manage all the emotions and stress that come with grief.
